In a world that is constantly striving for ways to reduce its carbon footprint, Maxwood Washrooms has taken a big step in the right direction. As the first and only commercial washroom manufacturer in the UK with a fully carbon-neutral range, we are working to redefine washroom design elements with a focus on environmental sustainability. In this blog post, we will take a closer look at Maxwood's carbon-neutral washroom range and explore the journey of how it is achieved.
What does carbon-neutral mean?
Carbon-neutral refers to a process or action that produces net-zero carbon emissions, meaning it doesn't add any carbon dioxide to the atmosphere. A carbon-neutral washroom is one that is designed to have little to no impact on the environment, in terms of carbon emissions.
One way to achieve a carbon-neutral washroom is through carbon offsetting. Carbon offsetting is the process of compensating for carbon emissions by investing in projects that reduce or remove carbon from the atmosphere.
How did we create the UK's first carbon-neutral washroom range?
Maxwood’s Director Robin McMullan explained why the carbon-neutral washroom range was an important project, “At Maxwood Washrooms, we believe that it is our responsibility to take care of the planet we live in. That's why we wanted to create a washroom range that is not only functional and stylish but also sustainable and eco-friendly.”
To achieve this, we set out to offset every single gram of CO2 that is produced in the manufacturing process of our washroom range. Through certified carbon offset projects that work towards the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, we were able to offset a total of 1,311,000 kg of CO2, making our range fully carbon neutral.
To put this into perspective, the amount of CO2 we have offset is equivalent to 1,560 economy flights from London to New York, 2,527,953 car miles, or 1,408,602 washing machine cycles.
We achieved this through three Climate Partner certified carbon offset projects. The first project is wind energy in Nashik, India. This project replaces parts of the fossil energy by feeding renewable wind energy into the regional NEWNE power grid.
The second project is forest protection in Cujubim, Brazil. This project follows a holistic approach to make a lasting change in the behaviour towards sustainable practices, forest protection, and conservation.
Lastly, our third project is ocean protection, which takes place worldwide. Every tonne of CO2 offset enables the Plastic Bank initiative to stop 10 kg of plastic waste from entering the ocean.
We're incredibly proud of what we've accomplished so far and we're committed to continuing our efforts to reduce our carbon footprint even further.
